Here's my friend Maslow (and his hierarchy of needs)
So, for those of us in counselling or a similar field of care, many of us have come across and use - Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
It's a theory that explains many of the needs of us as human beings, going from the bottom to the top of a triangle/pyramid (whatever you want to call it).
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
It reminds us of our most basic needs, as it can be easy to overlook them. We worry so much about all the different complicated things that happen in our lives, sometimes we forget to focus on the basics.
Feeding ourselves well, sleeping enough, living in sustainable, comfortable accommodation(s). If any of these things aren't going well, that'll add to levels of discomfort, and lead to a host of different issues, including poor mental health.
We all need to feel physically well and feel safe too - so when this need isn't met, we struggle there. And of course, this is the case for the rest of the pyramid/triangle. It helps to break down our lives into smaller chunks to see where the issues lie.
Do you feel happy with the place you're living in? Do you feel your diet and lifestyle needs to change for you to feel happier?
Are your relationships breaking down or do you feel happily connected to people enough? I'll go into more detail on each of these needs in future blog posts.
